Record Revenue Surge Highlights Expanding Market

The Spanish gaming industry has demonstrated exceptional performance during the second quarter of 2025, with substantial year-over-year growth across all key financial indicators. Total deposits reached an impressive €1.35 billion, representing a 23.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024, while withdrawals climbed to €962.9 million, showing a robust 28.9% rise.

Despite these impressive annual figures, quarter-on-quarter performance revealed more moderate growth patterns. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) increased by 2.8% from Q1 2025, totaling €410.3 million. However, deposits experienced a slight decline of 0.4%, while marketing expenditures and new account registrations both contracted compared to the previous quarter.

Segment Performance Analysis

The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) report provides a detailed breakdown of revenue distribution across gaming verticals:

  • Casino operations dominated the market, contributing 52.7% of total GGR (€216.4 million)
  • Sports betting maintained a strong position with 41.8% of GGR (€171.4 million)
  • Poker accounted for 4.7% of total revenue (€19.1 million)
  • Bingo represented the smallest segment at 0.8% (€3.4 million)

The sports betting sector showed impressive year-over-year growth of 18.2%, though quarter-on-quarter performance was more modest at 2.7%. Pre-match betting surged by 24.6%, while live betting experienced a significant contraction of 33.2%. Other fixed-odds categories, including horse racing, saw a 3.2% increase.

Bingo faced challenges during this period, with revenue declining both year-over-year (-6.4%) and quarter-on-quarter (-6.9%), highlighting the segment's struggle to maintain momentum amid broader market growth.

The casino segment performed exceptionally well, recording a 6.5% increase in GGR compared to Q1 2025. Year-over-year, casino operations experienced a remarkable 26% growth, primarily driven by a 33.6% surge in slots revenue. Other casino games, including blackjack, live roulette, and conventional roulette, also showed positive growth, though at more modest rates below 10%.

Marketing Investment and Account Growth

Marketing expenditure reached €164.5 million in Q2 2025, representing a substantial 37.1% increase year-over-year, though remaining relatively flat (-0.2%) compared to Q1 2025. The increase in marketing costs was largely attributable to a 53% rise in sponsorship spending from the previous quarter.

New account registrations grew by 11.7% year-on-year, totaling 504,853 new accounts in Q2 2025. However, this figure represents a notable 11.6% decrease compared to the first quarter of the year. The monthly average of active gaming accounts stood at 1.7 million, marking a 21% increase from the previous year but a slight 2.4% decline from Q1 2025.

Market Outlook

The Spanish gaming industry continues to demonstrate resilience and growth potential, with deposits, withdrawals, and overall GGR showing positive trajectories. The casino and sports betting segments remain the primary drivers of market expansion, while targeted marketing initiatives have successfully increased industry visibility and player acquisition.

However, challenges persist in certain segments, particularly bingo and poker, which will require strategic attention moving forward. The quarter-on-quarter decline in new account registrations may indicate a need for refreshed marketing approaches or product innovations to sustain growth momentum.

As the Spanish market continues to mature, operators will need to balance aggressive growth strategies with sustainable business practices to capitalize on the positive trends while addressing segment-specific challenges in this increasingly competitive landscape.
